In a recent survey conducted among members of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), 31.8 per cent reported skill shortages in managerial, advanced IT, technical and sales and marketing roles. By 2020 the Government has stated it wants to ensure that 500,000 people a year are in apprenticeships, with plans to integrate basic English, maths and IT skills.
Stephen Gardner, director of apprenticeships at the Learning Skills Council (LSC), recently stated that enthusiastic, talented would-be apprentices are available, but all too often are overlooked by employers.
He added that taking on trainees can benefit both employers and employees as the apprentice gets the benefits of handed-down business knowledge, while the company gets access to someone who is eager to make a career for themselves.
