Last week I visited one of our more niche industry clients – a scientific company who sell solutions globally. Their director was explaining to me that his business had proven to be ‘recession proof’ and that the industry as a whole seemed to be immune to the epidemic.
I started to consider how ‘recession proof’ a web design agency is – we haven’t really seen any drop in enquiries or business thus far, but I guess we thought that it would happen eventually, but will it?
I heard an interview on the radio with a local director who owned a small cleaning company who offering (to his admission) cheaper services than other local companies. He was explaining that because he offers less expensive services at the same level of quality as his competitors, that his business was booming! The difference between him and his competitors was that he was a small, local operation with lower overheads who was able to pass on his savings to his customer. Pricing is definitely his safe pass through the recession.
I started to consider our industry and about how technology as a whole would not stop developing just because we are in a recession. Content Managed websites are definitely the only option for the future and small HTML based web designers are struggling to keep up in a competitive market place. CMS normally comes at a high price, but ours has always been competitive as we use open source code, not custom coded rubbish that leaves customers stuck with what they already have – not the idea of a CMS!!
I guess the proof will be in the pudding...
